Á milli stríðs og friðar

Mánudaginn 20. mars n.k. heldur dr. Nina Petek fyrirlestur á málstofu í boði Guðfræðistofnunar í stofu 229 í Aðalbyggingu Háskóla Íslands. Málstofan hefst kl. 11:40 og lýkur kl. 13.

Yfirskrift fyrirlestursins er: The Bhagavad-Gita and the Mahabharata: Between War and Peace.

The problem of (non)violence, war and peace, raises questions which on many occasions cannot be answered unambiguously. The ideal of universal nonviolence was unconditionally advocated by Mahatma Gandhi, who found it on the doctrine of Bhagavad-Gita (around 1500 BC), religious philosophical poem, which is a part of the lengthy epic Mahabharata (between the 5th and the 3rd century BC). The lecture will indicate the framework of the epic and the poem, the war, which has a significant role as a foundation in order to explain the basic ethical, cosmological, metaphysical, epistemological and soteriological doctrines. Furthermore, a demonstration of integration of the relationship between war and peace, two incompatible concepts, into a broader religious framework as well as ethical and metaphysical discourse of the poem and the epic, where it is important to know theology, based on transcendent-immanent nature of god, the concept of loving devotion to the supreme entity (bhakti), and the role of divine intervention in the most significant upheavals of the human kind, in addition to the teachings of karma yoga, dharma and liberation. At the end of the discussion, the lecture indicates the essential nature and the manner of striving for peace and its realization in Bhagavad-Gita in Mahabharata, which does not appear only in the way of discursive theoretical speculations, but also essentially through the practice – yoga, active involvement in the world and, last but not least, through direct experience of the supreme god, which reaches its peak in the sense of sublime.
