Konan sem gerði Jesú gott (The woman who did Jesus a good thing)
„Náð sé með yður og friður frá Drottni vorum Jesú Kristi. Amen.
Amen.“

Grace and peace be with you all from our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
Last Wednesday was the day of Annunciation, commonly referred to as “Lady Day” in some countries. This day is always on the 25th of March and during it we remind ourselves of when the Angel of the Lord announced to Mary, the mother of Jesus, that she was indeed pregnant with the Holy Spirit. Women were generally not taken seriously in the ancient world, yet it was a woman who brought our Lord and Saviour into the world, with the help of God. Some of you might think: “Well, of course it was a woman for a man cannot give birth” and you would be right. The point is to recognize the importance of Mary. She did what no man could do, she became one with God. Without the woman, Christianity would not exist.
The birth narrative of Jesus also recognizes the importance of motherhood. The role of a mother is to be the caregiver, to nurture and protect her child. This is evident throughout the Bible and God is even portrayed as a woman in today’s lesson from the Isaiah: “Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you.” The relationship between a mother and her child is unique and important, especially during childhood.
I know this from a personal experience as a father. My daughter was extremely attached to her mother the first year. She usually could not go to sleep if her mother was not around. This created a problem, for no matter how many times I tried to put her to sleep, she would always cry out to her mother. One moment always crosses my mind when I think about this. It was when I was trying to put my daughter to sleep, and I used all the tricks, reading, praying and singing for her. This went on for about an hour until her mother had enough. She came into the room and put her hand on our daughter’s forehead and behold, she immediately fell asleep. This moment showed me how powerful the role of a mother can be.
Mary was not only the birthing machine whose only purpose was to bring the Lord into the world. She was the mother of God, took care of God, nurtured God, comforted God and raised God. God shows us that the role of a woman is of no less importance than the role of man. In my last Bible evening session, we discussed the Canaanite woman, who went to Jesus for help. The first time she called the Lord ignored her. The second time the disciples told her to leave and for the third time Jesus told her that his message, his bread, was only for the children of Israel and not for the dogs. She was a mother fighting to save her child’s life, and she told the Lord that even the dogs need to be fed. She demanded that Jesus uphold his end of the Great Commandment. He saw her faith and rewarded the mother by healing her child.
And yet again we see the importance of women at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper. A woman came with an alabaster flash of ointment of pure nard. She broke the flask and poured it over the Lord’s head, much to the dismay of Jesus’s disciples who scolded her. Jesus comes to her defence as she has done a good thing. He even goes as long as saying that she will be remembered when the Gospel is proclaimed to the world.
Jesus is the promised Messiah, and the word “Messiah” comes from the Hebrew language and means “The anointed one”. When the Hebrew Bible was translated into ancient Greek, the Greek word for “Messiah” was “Christ”. Christ is not a name; it is a title that was given to Jesus. According to Saint Peter, Jesus became Christ; was anointed during his baptism (Acts 10: 38) when God said: “You are my beloved son; with you I am well pleased.” When we say Jesus Christ, we are saying: “Jesus the anointed one”.
The anointment Jesus received was for his burial as the Lord said. The irony of the story is that the woman is the only one who understands what is about to happen; that the Lord is preparing for his sacrifice. She is the true disciple in the story! Jesus defends her in front of his clueless disciples for she is doing a good thing. anointment for burials was mainly done by family members or women. We see when Jesus is buried that the women were the first ones to come to the tomb. That is because they were about to anoint his body with perfumes to manage the decomposition.
There is, however, another irony in the story. Jesus is anointed for burial yes, but there is another meaning behind it. In ancient Israel Kings were anointed during coronations. The Prophet Samuel anointed king Saul and king David while the priest Zadok anointed king Solomon. It symbolizes that this person was chosen by God. The anointings of kings were generally handles by men of great respect and stature. The ceremonies were generally held in sacred places that were holy and clean. The anointment of Jesus took place in the home of a leper, and it was handled by an unnamed woman.
Christianity along with many other religions has been criticised for its prejudice against women. In many cases the criticism is valid, especially when the Bible or other religious documents are used to oppress women and keeping them out of the church. People have always been flawed, and the early church of Christ is no exception. In the beginning women had many roles inside the Jesus-movement but as time went on the church became more powerful. When the church got more power, some decisions had to be made about who could do what inside the church. Unfortunately, the women were systematically driven from the church, and they were generally considered lesser beings.
As usual Jesus turns everything on its head. A woman who is an outsider is the only one who understands his mission. She anoints him as a king whose throne lies in the grave and beyond it through his resurrection. This story tells us that women have important roles in the church. They are caregivers and nurtures. They are followers of Jesus and his disciples. They anoint him as king and are with him until the very end on the cross. Each time the Gospel of the Lord is proclaimed, let us remember this woman who understood Jesus’s mission and did him a good thing. Glory be to the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
