Náð og friður sé með ykkur öllum
frá Drottni vorum Jesú Kristi
Í dag er Alþjóðlegi söfnuðurinn 10
ára og á þeim tíma hefur hann verið athvarf fyrir marga erlenda flóttamenn og
innflytjendur sem leita að öruggu rými til að tilbiðja og eiga samfélag. Trúfrelsi
eru forréttindi sem íbúar Íslands eru vanir, en því miður er það ekki reynslan
heima hjá mörgum af okkar meðlimum. Við ættum öll að vera stolt og þakklát
fyrir að vera hluti af þessu andlega samfélagi þar sem við erum virt sem manneskjur
skapaðar í Guðs mynd. Ég hef aðeins þjónað þessum söfnuði í um það bil 9 mánuði,
en á þessum stutta tíma hef ég lært mikið. Ég er stoltur af því að vera prestur
ykkar ásamt sr. Toshiki.
Ég trúi því að Guð sé almáttugur,
alvitur og fullur af kærleika, en ég trúi því líka að Drottinn hafi húmor. Því
á þessum sunnudegi, af öllum sunnudögum, ákveður Guð að kenna okkur auðmýkt.
Allir ritningarlestrar dagsins leggja áherslu á auðmýkt og fordæma hroka eða
stolt. Höfundur Orðskviðanna varar við stolti og segir að það geti orðið okkur að
falli. Páll hvetur söfnuðinn í Efesus til að vera algerlega auðmjúkur. Loks
segir Jesús í Lúkasarguðspjalli að sá sem upphefur sjálfan sig verði auðmýktur.
Ég leitaði að biblíuversum sem
höfðu jákvætt viðhorf til stolts og fann aðeins eitt. Í Gamla testamentinu
lesum við í þriðja kafla Prédikarans: „Þannig sá ég að ekkert er betra en að
maðurinn gleðji sig við verk sín því að það er hlutskipti hans.“ Þessi texti
sýnir okkur að við megum vera stolt af afrekum okkar og fagna í Guði. Enda er
það Guð sem leiðir okkur með Heilögum anda til að vera stoltir þjónar Krists.
Fyrir utan þetta vers hefur stolt neikvæða ímynd í Biblíunni, þar sem það getur
leitt okkur til að trúa því að við séum betri en aðrir eða jafnvel æðri Guði.
Þannig er hroki syndugur þar sem hann byggist á sjálfupphefð og gefur Drottni okkar
enga dýrð.
Það er óhætt að segja að stolt
okkar í dag byggist ekki á hroka heldur á þakklæti gagnvart Guði og þessu
samfélagi. Samfélag okkar er blessun frá Guði og verðlaun fyrir auðmjúkt upphaf
þess. Þann 22. apríl árið 2015 myndaðist fyrsti „Seekers“ bænahópurinn. Honum
var stýrt af sr. Toshiki og sr. Kristínu Þórunni, en sú síðarnefnda fann upp á
nafninu á hópnum, „Seekers“. Í upphafi voru „Seekers“ samsettir af 7
flóttamönnum, og hafði hópurinn aðsetur í Lauganeskirkju. Í september sama ár
stækkaði hópurinn og teygði starfsemi sína til Hjallakirkju. Þann 11. október
2015 var fyrsta enskumælandi guðsþjónustan haldin í Breiðholtskirkju.
Bænahóparnir sem samsvöruðu sig með „Seekers“ komu að lokum saman til að mynda
opinberlega Alþjóðlega söfnuðinn árið 2018.
Þótt við séum afar stolt í dag,
þá held ég að eitt helsta einkenni þessa safnaðar sé auðmýktin. Í fyrsta lagi
verð ég að segja að sr. Toshiki er einn auðmýksti maður sem ég hef nokkurn tíma
hitt. Hann hefur þjónað innflytjendum og flóttamönnum á Íslandi svo lengi að ég
var ekki einu sinni fæddur þegar hann hóf sín störf! Þessi söfnuður er í vissum
skilningi, ef ég má orða það þannig, eins og eitt af „börnum hans“. Hann lifir
og hrærist í þessu starfi og getur horft til baka á tíma sinn hér með miklu stolti
og þakklæti.
Þegar ég var settur í embætti
prests í Vík í Mýrdal, var mér oft sagt af kirkjufólki: "Svona höfum við
alltaf gert hlutina". Ég skil það, því þau höfðu haft sama prestinn í 35
ár áður en ég kom. Aðrir prestar hvöttu mig til að breyta ekki of miklu fyrsta
árið. Þetta er skiljanlegt þar sem fólkið þurfti tíma til að venjast nýja
prestinum. Þetta var ekki raunin þegar ég var ráðinn hér til að vinna með sr. Toshiki.
Hann hefur sýnt mér mikla virðingu og auðmýkt með því að hvetja mig áfram sem
nýjan prest innflytjenda til að koma með nýjar hugmyndir og hefðir inn í
kirkjuna. Þetta er það sem auðmýkt snýst um.
Að vera auðmjúkur er að vera fylgjandi Jesú Krists. Fólkið í þessum söfnuði hefur sýnt meiri auðmýkt og þakklæti en ég hef nokkurn tíma séð. Ástæðan er sú að þau koma frá erfiðum og hörðum aðstæðum þar sem málfrelsi er takmarkað eða jafnvel ekki til. Þau koma hingað eftir að hafa verið ofsótt og kúguð vegna trúar sinnar og gilda. Fólkið hér er leitandi og þráir samfélag sem einkennist af kærleika og virðingu. Þar sem þau geta sagt hug sinn án fordóma og refsingar. Ég og Toshiki, sem og fyrri prestar sem þjónuðu þessu samfélagi eins og Kristín Þórunn og Ása Laufey, erum stolt af því að vera hluti af samfélagi sem er sannarlega blessun frá Drottni sjálfum. Takk allir fyrir 10 ár og við þökkum Breiðholtskirkju, sem og Þjóðkirkju Íslands, fyrir framlag þeirra til að hjálpa okkur að dreifa orði Jesú Krists til allra þjóða. Megi Alþjóðlegi söfnuðurinn halda áfram að dafna til dýrðar Guðs föður, sonar og Heilags anda. Amen.

Grace and peace be with you
all from our Lord Jesus Christ.
Today the International
Congregation is 10 years old, and during this time it has been the refuge for
many foreign refugees and immigrants who seek a safe space to worship and to
commune. Freedom of religion is a luxury that the people of Iceland are
accustomed to, but unfortunately that is not the experience back home for many
of our members. We should all be proud and thankful to be a part of this
spiritual community where we are respected as human beings created in the image
of God. I have only served this congregation for about 9 months and yet, in
that short period, I have learned a lot. I am proud to be your pastor along
with pastor Toshiki.
I believe that God is all
powerful, all knowing, and all loving, but I also believe that the Lord has
humour. For on this Sunday, out of all Sundays, God chooses to teach us about
being humble. All the readings from the Bible today put emphasis on humility
and condemn pridefulness. The author of Proverbs warns against pride and says
that it can be our downfall. Paul encourages the congregation of Ephesus to be completely
humble. Finally in Luke’s gospel, Jesus says that the one who exalts himself
will be humbled.
I looked for Bible passages
who had positive attitudes toward pride and found only one. In the Old
Testament, Ecclesiastes, chapter three we read: “there is nothing better than that a man should
rejoice in his work” This passage shows us that we can be proud of our
accomplishments and rejoice in God. Afterall, it is God who leads us through
the Holy Spirit to be prideful servants of Christ. Outside of this passage, pride
has a negative portrayal in the Bible as it can lead us to believe that we are
better than others or even superior to God. In that way pride is sinful as it
is based in arrogance and gives no glory to our Lord.
It is safe to say that our
pride today is not based in arrogance but in gratitude toward God and to this
community. Our society is a blessing from God and a reward for its humble
beginnings. On the 22nd of April in the year of 2015 emerged the
first “seekers” prayer group. It was led by pastor Toshiki and Pastor Kristín
Þórunn, but the latter came up with the name for the group, “seekers”. At first
the Seekers consisted of 7 refugees, a group based in Lauganes-church. In
September of the same year the group expanded and spread its activity to
Hjalla-church. On October 11th of 2015 the first English worship
service was held in Breiðholts-church. The prayer groups that associated
themselves with Seekers eventually came together to form the official
International Congregation in the year 2018.
Even though we are extremely
proud today, I think that one of the main characteristics of this congregation
is its humility. First, I must say that pastor Toshiki is one of the humblest
people I have ever met. He has been serving immigrants and refugees in Iceland since
before I was even born. This congregation is in a sense, if I may say, like one
of his children. He lives and breathes this kind of work and can look back on
his time here with great pride and gratitude.
When I was assigned to be a
pastor for the town of Vík in south of Iceland, I was often told by the church
people: “This is how we have always done things”. I understand, because they
had the same pastor for 35 years before I came. Other pastors encouraged me to
not change many things for the first year. This is understandable as the people
needed to get used to the new pastor. This was not the case when I was assigned
here to work with pastor Toshiki. He has shown me great humility in encouraging
me as a new pastor for immigrants to bring new ideas and traditions to the
church. This is what being humble is all about.
To be humble is to be a follower of Jesus Christ. The people of this congregation have shown more humility and gratitude than I have ever seen. The reason being that they come from difficult and harsh conditions where freedom of speech is limited or even non-existent. They come here after being persecuted and oppressed because of their beliefs and values. The people here are seekers who yearn for a community of love and respect. Where they speak their mind without judgement and punishment. Me and Toshiki, as well as former pastors who served this community like Kristín Þórunn and Ása Laufey, are proud to be a part of a community which is truly a blessing from the Lord himself. Thank you all for 10 years and we thank Breiðholts-church, as well as the Lutheran Church of Iceland, for their contribution in helping us to spread the word of Jesus Christ to all nations. May the International Congregation continue to thrive for the glory of God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
